2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Postseason Awards

NEW ORLEANS — Postseason awards for the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season were announced on Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the conclusion of the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, which were held this past weekend in Gainesville, Florida.

Remember: National Athletes & Coaches of the Year are voted on by member coaches after the championship meet, while Regional Athletes & Coaches of the Year are voted on prior to the championship meet.

USTFCCCA National Award Winners

NEW ORLEANS – National Athletes & Coaches of the Year for the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field season were announced on Wednesday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

These awards were voted on by USTFCCCA member coaches following the conclusion of the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend in Gainesville, Florida, based off performances at that meet, as well as throughout the rest of the season.

Only athletes and coaches from member institutions are eligible to win awards.

National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year

Tabarie Henry was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year. Henry, in his fourth year coaching the T-Birds’ sprints and hurdles, guided athletes to three wins at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Tapwanashe Makarawu swept the 60 and 200 meters, and Donald Chiyangwa won the 400 meters. Makarawu ran a seasonal-best 6.63 in the 60, while his meet-record 20.47 in the 200 was the No. 3 performance in NJCAA indoor history after setting the NJCAA indoor record of 20.29 earlier in the year.

National Men's Field Athlete of the Year

Olegs Kozjakovs was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Men’s Field Athlete of the Year. Kozjakovs, who hails from Latvia, scored 17 points at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. He won the heptathlon with 5327 points to become No. 7 on the all-time NJCAA indoor list and tied for second in the pole vault at 4.79m (15-8½). While the open pole vault was held during his participation in Day 1 of the heptathlon, he produced his highest vaulting on Day 2, clearing 5.00m (16-4 ¾) to move to No. 11 on the all-time NJCAA indoor list.

co-National Women's Coach of the Year

David Schenek was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field co-National Women’s Coach of the Year. Schenek, in his 13th year as Head Coach at Barton (Kan.) CC, led the Cougars to a co-team title at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Barton scored in 11 events with six titles and had the meet’s highest-scoring athlete, Sanae Hassnaoui with 30 points.

National Women's Track Athlete of the Year

Sanae Hassnaoui was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Women’s Track Athlete of the Year. Hassnaoui, who hails from Midelt, Morocco, Zimbabwe, won three events at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. She won the 3000 meters on Friday in 9:39.57 before winning the mile (4:47.32) and 1000 (2:52.63) – all three the fastest of the year by an NJCAA athlete and ranking Nos. 4, 2, and 10, respectively, on the all-time NJCAA indoor lists.

co-National Women's Coach of the Year

David Burnett was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field co-National Women’s Coach of the Year. Burnett, in his second year as Head Coach at Iowa Western CC, led the Reivers to a co-team title at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Iowa Western scored in 17 events with three titles , including a must-win in the concluding 4×400 relay with a school record of 3:41.93.

National Men's Track Athlete of the Year

JaQuavious Harris was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Men’s Track Athlete of the Year. Harris, who hails from Cheraw, South Carolina, was a double winner at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. He won the mile in meet-record 4:03.32 and the 3000 meters in 7:58.26 – both performances making him No. 3 on the respective all-time NJCAA indoor list. Earlier in the season he set an NJCAA indoor record in the 5000 at 13:40.87 and he had the year’s third-fastest time in the 800 at 1:50.52.

National Men's Coach of the Year

Brent Ewing was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Men’s Coach of the Year. Ewing, in his sixth year as head coach at Indian Hills (Iowa) CC, led the Warriors to their first-ever team title at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Indian Hills scored 91.5 points – scoring in 10 events with five critical runner-up finishes – spent the entire season No. 1 in the Track & Field Ratings Index national rankings.

National Women's Assistant Coach of the Year

Wade DeVries was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year. DeVries, in his second year coaching the Reivers’ jumpers, guided three athletes to score at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, including triple jump champion Mercy Honesty with a national-leading 12.47m (40-11).

National Women's Field Athlete of the Year

Treneese Hamilton was named the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Women’s Field Athlete of the Year. Hamilton, who hails from Canefield, Dominica, scored 18 points at the 2024 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. She won the shot put at 16.39m (53-9¼) to move to No. 2 on the all-time NJCAA indoor list and added a runner-up finish in the weight throw with a seasonal best effort of 18.73m (61-5½).
